ABOUT ME:
PROFESSIONAL LINKS N STUFF:
Hey there! My name is Mia.
I’m a 21 year old Baltimore born and raised artist, and am currently pursuing my passions at the Maryland Institute College of Art (or MICA). I’m mixed-race–Cuban and Filipino–and take great pride in both my cultures. I love animals, especially my pets, and my ultimate dream is to live as an old cat lady. I hope to one day reach my true form: sitting in the sun, painting in my Baltimore apartment with 3 cats surrounding me.
I dabble in a lot of mediums: watercolor, gouache, casein, printmaking, and even tattooing, but large-scale acrylic painting is my first love. I take a lot of pride in my work and making it from scratch, usually starting my creative process by building and stretching the canvas I’ll eventually paint on my hand. I like to explore themes like femininity, irony, pop culture, and my own lived experience, but I really just make what I want to make. I decided a long time ago that even though I enjoy people that enjoy my art, I want to be the one to enjoy it the most.
I do a lot of self reflection, writing, and research whenever I create. I ask myself the questions: What is art? When is it “finished”? How can I challenge myself and artistic standards? Can I take myself seriously if the subjects of my work aren’t serious themselves?
I make art that makes me want to keep creating in the future. I make things that excite me, whether that’s by using my favorite colors, drawing stupid little creatures, or getting to know myself better in the process.
